Ethanol, which is the alcohol in beverages, is toxic because of its molecular effects on tissues; additionally, the first breakdown product of alcohol, which is acetaldehyde, is even more toxic.
"Problem drinking" is generally defined as any consumption of alcohol that results in significant risk of physical damage, psychological problems, accidents, and social or domestic problems.
In the US alone, alcohol is responsible for over 17,000 deaths on the roads due to individuals driving while under the influence of alcohol. This accounts for 41% of all USA road accidents.
