17% of 18-25 year old women and 13% of 26-34 year old women of child-bearing age report binge drinking (five or more drinks on one occasion) within the past month.
Why Is Underage Drinking Dangerous? Underage drinking is a major cause of death from injuries among young people. Each year, approximately 5,000 people under age 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings.
A recent report by the national Academy of Sciences during 2008 states that 60 percent of eighth graders say that alcohol is easy to obtain.
The risk of a hemorrhagic stroke is up to three times more likely among alcoholics than in people that do not drink.
